Day #2 of the BobLog of Bob's trip to Puerto Rico Today started very early with the crowing of a rooster (or two) sometime before 5AM. I got to sleep sometime after 1, so once again, just had a bit of a nap. Scott & Elaine had not only the roosters, but also a pack of dogs that were fighting nearby. Things like this don't normally occur to me as I rarely sleep with the windows open, but here you are dependent on the breeze blowing through the windows to cool the place, and these things suddenly become issues. I got up around 7:45, and spent the next two hours dealing with phone calls and a ton of emails. Isaac made me breakfast, as Willy and Gladys were out doing some wedding stuff. I was able to upload a couple pictures before the internet stopped working. For some reason, about half-way through my work this morning, the phone internet stopped working, and its very spotty now. I hope I can mail this out ok. We headed out to a local market that wasn't too far away from our house. This was quite interesting! There were ALL SORTS of things for sale - old tools, animals, food, etc etc. Some of the stuff was antiques, some just plain junk, some new stuff. Several vendors had birds - Cockateals, Parakeets, and Love Birds. Many had chickens, roosters, and eggs. One guy even had mice and rats (snake food). I picked up some sneekers ($15), and a belt ($2.50). I took a lot of pictures of this, so I hope to be able to send them up shortly. There were a couple people selling auto stuff - a mini Auto Finishers in PR! hehe. There even was a cock fight, which we heard is legal in PR, but only in official places... this was not such a place. It was a bit disturbing. We then stopped by a little restaurant, and had lunch. They had all hot sandwitches, wasn't too bad. I had a Pavo sandwitch w/cheese - this is the gobble-gobble meat! :-) We then went to this ice cream shop in a historic part of the island - where some independence resistance effort occurred in 1948. They had every imaginable flavor of ice cream! Some examples: carrot, squash, and even garlic ice cream! I got a call from Nu-look Henrietta, who's roadrunner line went down today, nuking their internet access. This should not have affected them in the way that it did, so I'm going to have to look into the configuration of stuff when I get back. Thankfully, I was able to talk Nancy through a whole mess of steps, and got them back up without having to get connected. You might recall how I mentioned that the roads here are very small. They are also very winding in this hilly area. I'm sure some of the turns they have here would not be at all accepable in the US. Hair-pin 270 degree turns, and also often at a steep angle. To make life even more interesting, we are using a 13 passenger vehicle! On our way out and back, we encountered a section of road at the edge of a cliff that had caved in! The 1.5 lane road narrowed to a .8 lane road. The part that was missing was pretty much a straight drop that went down a hundred or so feet! I would not have wanted to be the person driving on that when it gave in! We were able to find a spot that we could pull over shortly after this location, so we took some pictures. It sure was scenic! Came back to the house(s), where we later had a large spread for the rehersal dinner. Many of the friends and relatives were here, and Gladys had baked loads of lasagna. Mmmm! We then went to the church for the wedding rehersal. Scotty and I had gone over to the church before dinner and tweaked up the sound system, adding in the stuff I brought down (digital equalizer, wireless microphones, cables). The building is all concrete, which is similar to the majority of the houses and buildings down here. The floors are generally all tile, so the termites can't do a whole lot of damage. This construction however makes for very reverberant rooms, and the church is no exception. Intelligibility is very poor in this little church, because sound hangs around for days. We did the best we could do in speaker placement and system equalization. We also hooked up the CD player to the system, so at least music playback will be better than just using a little boombox. Rehersal went ok, and afterward all the ladies and Willy went to the reception place, while the rest of us stayed home. Scotty came over and we tried to get on the internet. We had success for about 30 seconds, then the connection dropped, and was gone the rest of the night. I will probably have to send this log out tomorrow night, possibly later, as I wasn't able to go anywhere else to try to get a better signal. Its now 11:10PM, and I'm going to take a shower and go to bed early. Tomorrow is the big wedding day! The big events start at 1PM. Nite! Bob
